Ďalšou významnou postavou je Jules Verne, autor kníh Cesta do stredu Zeme alebo Dvadsaťtisíc míľ pod morom. Jeho príbehy spájajú dobrodružstvo s vtedajšími vedeckými poznatkami a predpokladmi. Sú realistické, napínavé a pomocou nevídaných technológií objavujú neznáme. Posledným z pomyselných zakladateľov sci-fi je H.G. Wells, ktorý sa v rámci žánru sústredil na sociálnu kritiku. Jeho romány Vojna svetov, Stroj času alebo Neviditeľný muž pracujú najmä s dopadmi pokroku na ľudstvo.
V 20. storočí sa sci-fi začína formovať ako samostatný a jasne rozpoznateľný žánr. Zlatý vek je spojený predovšetkým s americkými autormi a rozvojom časopisov zameraných na fantastiku. Kľúčovým autorom tohto obdobia je Isaac Asimov. Medzi jeho najvýznamnejšie diela patrí séria Nadácia a Ja, Robot spolu s tromi zákonmi robotiky, ktoré dodnes ovplyvňujú náš pohľad na robotov a AI. Ďalším prielomovým dielom tejto doby je 2001: Vesmírna odysea od Arthur C. Clarke. Kľúčovým prvkom je spojenie technologického pokroku a viery vo vedu, pričom kniha zároveň upozorňuje na neuchopiteľnosť a možné dôsledky rýchleho vedeckého vývoja.
New Wave sci-fi sa sústredila okolo časopisu New Worlds a smerovala proti stereotypom v sci-fi literatúre. Novými témami sú okrem technológií aj psychológia postáv, politika, identita a sociálne štruktúry. Témy rovnosti, genderu a kultúrnych rozdielov vykresľuje na pozadí života na cudzej planéte. Ukazuje, že sci-fi môže byť filozofické, jemné a literárne hodnotné.
Studená vojna a globalizácia ovplyvnili tón kníh aj celý žánr. Pesimizmus a vedomie nebezpečenstva jadrového konfliktu vyvolali vznik dystopických vízií a pochmúrnych predpovedí budúcnosti. Jednou z ikonických kníh definujúcich cyberpunk je Neuromancer. Cyberpunk sa stal symbolom vyspelých spoločností prepojených korporáciami a AI, ktorá je morálne rozpadnutá a pod neustálym útokom hackerských sietí. Medzi najobľúbenejšie dystopické romány patrí 1984 od Georgea Orwella,. Spojuje ich motív zneužitia moci, straty individuality a cenzúry.
