This is the first detailed monographic, phytosociological treatment in English on all the plant communities of Hungary. In its introductory part, first the basic phytosociological terms are explained, then an overview is presented on the main geographic features of the country including climate, topography, geology, soil, and hydrological characteristics, the origin of the flora, and the postglacial history and regional development of the vegetation. All the so-far recognized and formally described plant communities are then introduced in detail in relation to their ecological characteristics and sociological features (such as the characteristic species combination). There are altogether 551 communities analyzed in this book, which are grouped as follows: aquatic vegetation (50), vegetation of marshes and moors (95), wet meadows and pastures (49), saline vegetation (37), rock and dry grassland communities (86), weed communities (148), and woods and shrubberies (136). The large number of communities is the consequence of the influence of three prevailing climate types (Central European, continental, and sub-Mediterranean) in the Carpathian Basin, and the geographical contact of several distinct floras of different origin (Atlantic, Balkanian, Pontic), the interaction of which determines the unique character of the Pannonian vegetation.
