Victor Hugo (1802–1885) bol francúzsky básnik, dramatik a románopisec, jedna z najväčších postáv romantizmu. Je autorom nadčasových románov Bedári a Chrám Matky Božej v Paríži. Bedári – príbeh o Jeanovi Valgjeanovi – sa stali základom celosvetovo slávneho muzikálu a mnohých filmových adaptácií. Hugo bol tiež politickým aktivistom bojujúcim za slobodu tlače a ľudské práva, za čo strávil roky vo vyhnanstve.
