Marca Aurelia preslávila jednak jeho výnimočná schopnosť udržiavať i počas problematických pomerov celistvosť ríše a riešiť zložité problémy, a tiež jeho filozofické dielo Myšlienky k sebe samému. Dielo napísal v posledných rokoch svojho života a začal ho písať na území Kvádov pri Hrone, teda na území dnešného Slovenska.
