Dick Francis bol britský spisovateľ detektívnych románov. Tento bývalý džokej si získal dobré meno ako autor detektívok z dostihového prostredia. Narodil sa ako Richard Stanley Francis v mestečku Lawrenny v južnom Walese. Po ukončení kariéry sa stal dostihovým korešpondentom London Sunday Express, pre ktorý písal až do roku 1973. Svoju prvú knihu - autobiografiu - vydal v roku 1957, prvý román potom o päť rokov neskôr, v roku 1962. Odvtedy sa mu darilo vydať pravidelne jeden román ročne.
