Siedmy štúdiový album Green Day American Idiot vyšiel v septembri 2004 a odvtedy sa z neho predalo viac ako 23 miliónov kópií po celom svete, vrátane 9 miliónov v USA. Album je majstrovským dielom punk rockovej opery, ktoré získalo cenu za najlepší rockový album v roku 2005 na udeľovaní cien Grammy©. Z albumu bolo vydaných päť úspešných singlov: „Boulevard of Broken Dreams“, „Holiday“, „Wake Me Up When September Ends“, „Jesus of Suburbia“ a titulná skladba „American Idiot“.
