This book covers the basics of international trade and financing, and goes in-depth into the study of carriage of goods under bills of lading and voyage and time charters. It also briefly covers sea waybills and ship’s delivery orders. The international conventions covered at depth include the Hague Rules of 1924, Hague-Visby Rules of 1968 and Hague-Visby Rules with SDR Protocol as amended in 1979. While the book is primarily based on the English law, an extensive coverage of Singaporean and Malaysian laws is included. Malaysia adopts Hague Rules, Singapore adopts Hague-Visby Rules as at 1968, and the UK adopts the Hague-Visby Rules with SDR Protocol. The coverage of the Singaporean and Malaysian cases and materials complements the knowledge of the English law with current application of the Hague / Hague-Visby Rules, issues which frequently appear before the English courts. In addition to that, some Indian statutes have been covered which serve as a model law for many Commonwealth jurisdictions, questions relating to which again frequently appear before the English courts.
Primarily, the book will be a useful guide to practitioners, academicians and students. It may also be of interest to sea carriers, freight forwarders, international traders, and financiers who wish to acquire a clear understanding of the key principles in a practical context.
